Barbarian (2022) will confound your expectations.
When Tess (Georgina Campbell) arrives in a derelict suburb of Detroit one rainy night, to find her Airbnb has been double-booked, you’re on edge. When you realise Keith (Bill Skarsgård), the other person in this double-book is a half-decent human being, your initial suspicion turns to relief.

This pattern of confounded expectations continues as two more, seemingly tangential, stories are folded in. AJ (Justin Long) and Frank (Richard Brake), the current and former owners of the house, introduce tones of humour and creepy grimness in equal measure. The result is a well paced series of jump-scares and revelations that keep you guessing and slack-jawed.
