Writing's a fight and this boy needs a battle
This did make me laugh, the way irony makes you laugh, it stings. Jeffery Wright’s “Monk” is smart, insightful, a genius in a world that wants dullards. So, as a joke, he offers them stupid, and the world laps it up, and bit by bit he’s dragged into their mediocrity. In the end, it doesn’t matter how hard you try, stupid loves company.
Inflating the balloon of credibility to bursting, Bullet Train (2022) is a film to enthral and excite young men. A bunch of fast talking, gun touting, bomb wielding, assassins chase a briefcase of money up and down the titular Bullet Train in service of fate, or enlightenment, or revenge, or some well choreographed bloody mayhem. Likeable but not profound.
This might be the purest piece of cinema I’ve seen in a long while. Somewhere in Eastern Europe a jewish boy does what he must to survive the horrors of WWII, manifest as every form of sexual and social deviance possible. Startling in so many ways.
